Crashing the Gates: How a Handful of Progressive Activists Brought Liberal Talk-Radio Back to the Nation's Capitol

DC is the most liberal region of the country, but until now all the talk on the radio dial skewed right.

The District of Columbia, Gallup tells us, is the most progressive region in the country – 40 percent of those living in the nation's capitol identify themselves as liberals. It's got a commanding lead – Massachussetts is the only state to hit the 30 percent mark.

But if you're stuck in traffic on the infamous Beltway and want to tune into some political talk, you've only had the option of listening to right-wing bloviators like Limbaugh and Hannity. Since Air America Radio's demise in 2009, Washington has been without a liberal alternative to right-wing hate-radio.

That is, until last month, when three long-time progressive activists – Cliff Schecter, Alex Lawson and Kymone Freeman -- took over WPWC 1480 AM, and rebranded it as We Act Radio.

Until our launch there was really only right-wing talk in DC. So the vast majority of us, who north of 60 to 70 percent in poll after poll agree that Social Security should be protected, arms dealers and investment banks shouldn't be able to buy off Congress, and our civil justice system shouldn't become a playground for corporations, to pick a few examples...we had no real voice in Washington. We do now. We will be a part of the conversation, from coffee shops to cab rides, that ultimately shapes conventional wisdom and eventually policy.

in a world of insanity, it is the strong that go crazy while the weak pretends there is nothing wrong.

Color me crazy - I want to hear about and talk about the truth.

How well do other "preogressive" radio stations do anyways?

How good did Air America do? Oh that is right they folded cause no one listened to them

Not quite. They folded because of lack of investment...yet another way we are being held back from hearing the truth - big money.

Why did they lose investment? Because advertisers were not going to spend money on ads if no one was listening to them right? If the station had a big following advertisers would have spent money to advertise on their station -

The oligarchs who have the money didn't want the serfs to learn the facts, hear the other side, or form their own opinion. Whenever possible they use their money to control the flow of information. Then they accuse those who would try to add perspective of indoctrination.

BostonMan - No, not that. I was listening to a radio talk show just yesterday on this subject; they couldn't get people to invest because of risk and fallout from clients, stockholders, etc. Many do not want to be associated with extreme ideas, truth or not - it is better for them to "go with the flow". This is understandable when it's about money, but hard for the rest of us when we want to hear it all, and then make our own decisions. Nobody wants to live in a vacuum.

Are you kidding me? If that was true why is MSNBC still on the air? Why did Rachel Maddow go from air america to Msnbc? If they were trying to quiet progressives like her why is she still on the air ?

No, not that. I was listening to a radio talk show just yesterday on this subject; they couldn't get people to invest because of risk and fallout from clients, stockholders, etc

People who do not agree with the on air personalities you mean ? So then advertisers did not want to invest in a show that their consumers do not listen to right?

Why are you comparing radio to TV and internet?

Because the poster above you said the reason air america went under was because the powerful were trying to silence the flow of information . So pointing out that there are liberal commentators on different venues kind of disputes that claim doesn't it?

Oh, I see. The good thing about radio is that is that you can preset your radio tuner to broadcast whatever it is that works for you. I love that part: NPR/Rock for me.

the truth is never as interesting as the big lie. ..... republican talk radio has learned that lesson welll..... whether you listen to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Mark Levin, or any of the other over the top conservatives they get big ratings because they are entertaining liars. They have managed to develop shows where hyperbole and misstatements, faux outrage and outright lies are received by their red meat base with almost rabid enthusiasm....... even when one of their own, like a Glenn Beck, proves to be too crazy, even for them on television, he retains his audience on the radio with the same group of advertisers......unfortunately, you tell the truth once, and if you continue to repeat it, it becomes boring....... thus the fate of liberal talk radio.

People who listen for the truth generally want to do something about the negative aspects of it, and do so by means of protest and hopefully legislation. It is happening as we write.
